Happy New Year everyone! Sorry we didn´t do the sms´s, no coverage here on my (dodgy) international SIM card (even though we were supposed to). I guess/hope travel blogs these days are also an accepted form of wishing people well?
Anyway, apart from the usual eating and drinking (fairly standard operating procedure), I have to admit El Calafate (where we are now) did have one little twist: at midnight the sun hadn´t actually set yet fully (it was definitely dusk though, but still). A little odd, but pretty cool. Also a good reminder that we´re getting pretty far south now and well into summer. If only the weather would focus on the summer bit more than the far south bit
So, looking back I have to admit 2007 was pretty good. Not often you´re lucky enough to get married and go travelling for a few months. 2008 has some expectations to live up to I´m thinking
. Anyway, off to Torres del Paine National Park tomorrow, so if the weather co-operates, I´m thinking 2008 might get off to not too bad a start either…
Alright, so perhaps Xmas was a few days ago but when you´re on holidays you don´t really know what day of the week it is or whether it´s a major holiday or not. Not having internet for a few days didn´t help either in getting our Xmas wishes out.
Anyway, I realise I´m a bit behind with my posts (now in El Chalten in the Los Glaciaros National Park in Argentina btw), which will be fixed soon enough, but as a bit of a preview: we basically spent Xmas day hiking near Bariloche and had dinner with all the others on the Dragoman truck at a microbrewery which also did some great steak and chocolate mousse. Oh, and did I mention that Bariloche is considered the chocolate capital of Argentina? Either way, let´s just say we´re coping with the whole setup at the moment, even if Xmas was a little strange this year…
Will be spending NYE in El Calafate (a small city wedged between a couple of national parks), again undoubtedly eating too much in between hikes. Just the way we (or I anyway) like it
Finally, if I don´t get to internet before then, have a great New Years everyone! Looking forward to catching up with you all around the world over the coming year!
And have been for a few days… Easy to forget when you´re on holidays
Go to the Our Wedding page on the left for the details as to how to check them out.
Well, in Cusco (Peru) now. Have recovered from trip over here (47hrs door to door from Melbourne… and who said travel can’t be fun) and have vaguely acclimatised to the altitude (approx 3300m). With that out of the way I’m actually quite enjoying being quite the tourist again. Which you know you are when
- You struggle to understand a single word the locals say (although also had that issue in Glasgow)
- You struggle to identify most foods at the markets. And heading to the local ”supermarket” doesn’t improve things.
- You can’t help but giggle childishly at your Do Not Disturb sign (which reads No Molestar) even though you already knew that one from previous travels.
Pretty standard stuff so far really, it’s just that it’s been a while.
One thing that was cool though was watching the Brazil – Peru game the other day on TV (1-1 btw for anyone following world cup qualifiers). Didn’t understand a word the commentators said but when Peru scored the equaliser, not a whole lot of translating was needed.
Oh, and I think I forgot to welcome you to our travel blog. This is where we’ll be putting any updates on our adventures over the next few months (the photos that I usually put on www.dylanav.com might not eventuate for a bit…), so come back here if you’re interested to find out where we are.
Last tip: to see a Google map of our itinerary (and some arrival dates in the various places), check out the Itinerary page on the left.
We’ve put up some of our photos on www.dylanav.com (under the Happy Snaps section which you’ll have to log to using the usual details). The link on the left has a few of them as a preview and has the details of where to check out the photos by our wedding photographer.
